So uhhh what’s SPACEJUMP?

Hey! Alyssia here – one of the founders of SPACEJUMP 🚀 After 9 months of operation and a few events up our sleeves, I wanted to share some insight into who we are and what we are doing as we start to establish ourselves in the Perth gaming community!

TL;DR

We’re just a group of gamers wanting to make cool gaming events for other like-minded people - all we need is support from the gamers of Perth! With your attendance and participation in our events, we can all help make Perth an exciting gaming and esports hotspot. If you want to chat or ask about what we’re up to please feel free to drop a line to hello@spacejump.gg or reach out in our Discord

Who makes up the SPACEJUMP team?

In early-2022, myself (Alyssia) and two of my friends (Aiden, and James) were having a late-night Minecraft gaming session and through classic non-sensical chats, we spoke about the gaming and esports scene in Perth and how we thought it was pretty small when compared to other parts of Australia and the world. As we are three gamers who have a background in all things events and festival management, we thought “F**k it, let’s have a crack at creating some events in Perth”.

Jump to April 2023, as a small team of 3, we’ve hosted private gaming events, locked in activations at a range of Perth expos/festivals, and are working on delivering our first major esports event, The Supersonic Cup. To help us deliver our upcoming events and activations scheduled for the year, we’ve also hired a small handful of folks who are just as passionate about the industry and who want to learn with us as we deliver gaming and esports events. Although we SPACEJUMP founders were happy to work at the events ourselves, we thought it was important to provide opportunities to other people who are interested in gaming as a career – after all, the more the merrier when trying to grow a community!

Why did you create SPACEJUMP?

As mentioned, we created SPACEJUMP as a bit of a passion project in hopes of creating gaming and esports events for the community. We truly believe that as Perth is becoming a key player in the digital industries with so many local tech startups making waves around the globe, we can also shine in the gaming/esports realm and become a welcome destination for events such as Dreamhack, PAX, and other key esports events that are looking to make a home in Australia. We understand Perth has a long way to go before we can compete with the East Coast for a slice of the gaming and esports pie however, we have to start somewhere to establish ourselves!

So how does Perth get established as a go-to designation for gaming and esports? Well, we think there are three important factors to this:

  1. We bring together and grow the community.
It is no secret that Perth is an isolated city but hey, I think that is what makes us unique and can really work to our benefit! It is important that the gaming/esports community over here works together on the common goal of creating more opportunities for us to thrive in this industry. There are some other great groups such as Pixel Expo, Perth Games Festival, the Uni Esports Clubs (ECU, Murdoch, UWA, and Curtin), and Level Her Up (just to name a few!) who are already playing their part in this however, SPACEJUMP hopes that we can tap into the esports side of things and do our best to nurture and bring together that community. SPACEJUMP is doing this by growing and maintaining a Discord server and creating in-person events for people to come together and celebrate gaming/esports.

  2. We showcase Perth as a city capable of hosting gaming/esports events.
To demonstrate that Perth is in a position to tackle larger-scale events, we first need to host some of our own homegrown events. By doing this, we can show that we have the venues, audience, and talent (event managers, technicians, casters, etc.) available to make our mark and host events as part of the global landscape. SPACEJUMP is doing this through our upcoming event, The Supersonic Cup as well as other pop-up activations we are hosting at events like Froth Town.

  3. We introduce local companies to gaming/esports and get them involved in the community.
There are a lot of companies in Perth who are looking to enter this space but just aren’t sure how. By networking and creating opportunities to engage with them, we can show them what the industry is all about and have them on board as an ally for when Perth gets the opportunity to take things to the next level. SPACEJUMP is doing this through our work with the WA Museum and the City of Perth.

What does SPACEJUMP do?

Well, we create lots of different events tailored around gaming and esports! From small-scale Mario Kart AR workshops at schools and the museum to hosting larger esports tournaments and gaming activations, SPACEJUMP is open to delivering whatever is in demand.

An event we’re excited about is our upcoming community tournament - The Supersonic Cup Featuring Rocket League. With an online Open Qualifier (4 June 2023) leading to a Main Event at The Rechabite (18 June 2023), this 3v3 Rocket League tournament will be the first of its kind here in WA. We hope that it is the first step in demonstrating that Perth can host these large-scale esports events with additional entertainment as it is set to showcase some of Perth’s coolest gaming and pop culture gaming stalls, along with Sev’s Pics (TikTok star) as MC, Twitch streamer showcases, and live entertainment.

To be frank, we just love gaming! Thanks to our recent partnership with Allied Gaming & AMD, we have the equipment needed to host gaming events so whatever we can do to create opportunities, we will do it!
